In his portraits of the many artists in his circle he probed new psychological depths, and an extended, “composite” portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe marked a new form of photographic description. Upon his return to New York, he turned his camera to the streets and buildings of that rapidly changing city, printing his images as photogravures in order to emphasize the atmospheric effects and lend them a softening tone.īeginning around 1910, Stieglitz shifted away from the painterly approach of the Pictorialists and toward a more direct, straightforward depiction, which was echoed in his use of photographic papers such as platinum, palladium, and later, gelatin silver prints. Studying in Europe, he made picturesque scenes with great technical skill, winning prizes for his large carbon prints. Stieglitz’s early photographs and writings served as arguments for photography’s acceptance as an art form on par with painting. Later, he embraced straight photography, linking its potential for modern expression with that of avant-garde painting and sculpture. A founder of the Photo-Secession, a Pictorialist group of photographers, he elevated the discourse and practice of photography, forming key connections between American and European movements. His wife, O’Keeffe was in authority of his belongings and artworks, which she donated to various museums and galleries.Through his own photographic work over the course of a half century, the journals he edited and published, and the exhibitions he mounted at his influential New York galleries, Alfred Stieglitz played a crucial role in establishing photography as an integral part of modern art in America. In 1925, he founded The Intimate Gallery. In 1922, he produced a series, Music – A Sequence of Ten Cloud Photographs. He was stunned by her work and displayed her show at 291. When the World War I broke out, Stieglitz struggled to keep Camera Work publication active. In 1910, he organized a show for Albright Art Gallery, covering more than six hundred stunning prints by various artists. In 1902, Stieglitz organized a show at Arts Club that displayed the artworks by his friends. Later, he resigned from the post of Camera Notes’ editor. In 1899, Stieglitz had his first one-man show at the Camera Club. Its first issue entitled Camera Notes, was published in July, 1897. To promote the artists’ works and writings, he proposed the idea of substituting the Club’s newsletter by a magazine. The two clubs united in 1896 and Alfred Stieglitz became the vice president of the new organization. After being elected as one of the first two American member of the Linked Ring, Stieglitz resigned as editor of The American Amateur Photographer and the Photochrome Company to pursue his mission of amalgamating the only two photographer societies of New York, the Society of Amateur Photographers and the New York Camera Club. In 1983, Stieglitz accepted a job as a co-editor of The American Amateur Photographer Magazine.Ī Venetian Canal, The Net Mender and A Wet Day on the Boulevard, Paris, are some of his famous work from 1894. In 1892, he captured The Terminal and the Winter, Fifth Avenue, two of his exceptional images that further heightened his fame. Stieglitz father helped him purchase a photography related business, Photochrome Engraving Company though the business didn’t make much profit.
